The Work of the Holy Spirit: He Reveals!

The work of the Holy Spirit in revealing God's words to the Old Testament prophets and New Testament apostles, in many cases so that these words could be put into Scripture.

The whole of the Old Testament Scriptures came about by the work of the Spirit...

"For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."

(2 Peter 1:21 ESV)

How and in what way does the Holy Spirit guide believers today?

  1. He leads-The Holy Spirit provides leadership so that we know where God wants us to serve him.

"Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil."
    (Matthew 4:1 ESV)

"And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go over and join this chariot.""
    (Acts 8:29 ESV)

"And while Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, three men are looking for you. Rise and go down and accompany them without hesitation, for I have sent them.""
    (Acts 10:19-20 ESV)

"While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.""
    (Acts 13:2 ESV)

The leadership of the Holy Spirit is not always dramatic but should be a daily part of who we are and how we live.

"For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God."

(Romans 8:14 ESV)

"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

(Galatians 5:16 ESV)

2. The Holy Spirit provides conviction.

"And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged."
(John 16:8-11 ESV)

3. The Holy Spirit reveals the love of God.

"and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us."
(Romans 5:5 ESV)

4. The Holy Spirit reveals and provides assurance.

"The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,"
(Romans 8:16 ESV)

"Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us."
(1 John 3:24 ESV)

"By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit."
(1 John 4:13 ESV)

5. The Holy Spirit reveals and teaches us the the truth.

"that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might"
(Ephesians 1:17-19 ESV)
